Armaan Mumtaz is an artist of Mexican and Pakistani descent, with deep interest in 2D making as a means of meditating on cultural-familial histories as they relate to Islam, Catholicism, and fragmented identity. The work maps a mental landscape informed by confusion and tension, and serves as a declaration of visual selfhood steeped in melodramatic urgency. Through the creation of a personal symbol codex, referencing recurring imagery from memories, Armaan attempts to navigate ideas of lineage, dual religion, and familial history’s impact on personal identity and autonomy. This symbology has branched into a specific interest in jewelry: adornment as personal ritual, the heirloom as a powerful vessel, and jewelry as ancestral talisman. This exploration emerges from the root impulse to understand the experiences, voices, and circumstances that construct foundational identity, in turn finding the footing to ascertain complete agency over that identity. This is most evident in Armaan’s unflinching dedication to
self portraiture as a mode of establishing power over
one’s own image, and consequently, oneself.
